…The smallest loss, whether of property, health, importance, glory, or any of the most insignificant things, incites us to murmur, to malign, to complain, to despair; but when Jesus and His grace are lost, how little we care. how indifferent we are to such a loss! But if we lose our sweetest Saviour, it is because we ourselves desire and demand it. We voluntarily force Him to do so, so that He may leave this dwelling He has established in our hearts.
We by our deeds respond to Him: Give way from me, Jesus, for my pride and pride will never be reconciled with Thy humility; – give way to Thy love, for the love of creation has taken up my whole heart. Give way Jesus! giver of peace, before the vengeance and hatred of my heart. Thou art life and light, and my soul wants to live in the darkness of death. Mary had no peace until she found and recovered her Son; and we, on the contrary, are said to have no peace until we lose Jesus.
Mary was looking for Jesus, and Jesus is looking for us and calling out to us: Come to me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will cool you down! He says to us: I stand at the door and knock! I, the Lord and Creator of heaven and earth, stand at the door of your heart as a beggar asking for alms, as a guilty man asking for mercy! I cry to your heart as a persecuted person to a defender, as a sick person to a doctor! I cry to your heart by inspiration, by word, by conscience, by example and by the cross. We have lost Jesus in our joys and pleasures, amidst tears and grief we will find Him! Let us take Mary as our guide. She will teach us: how, – She will show us: where to seek and find Jesus.
