The first 2008 Lenten meditation given to the Pope and Roman Curia.

Offering the first Lenten meditation in the Redemptoris Mater Chapel of the Apostolic Palace, the Preacher to the Papal Household, Fr. Raniero Cantalamessa, said, "The word that we read in the Bible is not in itself a material sign, but because of faith and the illumination of the Holy Spirit, we mysteriously enter into contact with the living truth of God through it and we listen to the voice of Christ." This year's Lenten meditations, titled, "The Word of God is alive and at work," is currently slated to be included in October's Synod of Bishops on the Word of God. The first meditation reflected on the proclamation of the Gospel in the life of Christ, that is, the Jesus Who preaches. The following meditations will focus on the Church's mission to announce the Gospel, or, Christ preached; the Word of God as a means of personal sanctification through lectio divina; and, lastly, the relationship between Spirit and Word, as encountered in a spiritual reading of the Bible.
