Varallo Sesia is a small town in northern Italy.
Sacro Monte towers above it is one of the Sacred Mountains.
A monk, in the 15th century, made a pilgrimage to Jerusalem and decided to create a pilgrimage site, or New Jerusalem .
Many chapels were built on the mountain.
Each one represents a scene from the Bible.
This is Jesuss birth.
The sculptures initially were simple wooden carvings
Sacro Monte changed significantly in the 16th Century when the artist Gaudenzio Ferrari and his students worked at the site.
Life-sized sculptures and fresco paintings were skilfully combined
to portray Jesuss life.
Visitors to the chapels see each step
of Jesuss life in sequence.
They conjure up the events and suffering of Christs Passion.
This is the scene when Jesus was sentenced to death.
He was brought to trial as an agitator.
Pontius Pilate tried to release him but the people called for Jesus to be crucified.
The devout could easily imagine hearing the angry roar of the people.
Jesus was whipped and put on the cross.
And then forced to carry it on his back.
Angry crowds and grieving women followed.
The story continues in this scene in the next chapel.
You can almost hear the voice of Jesus, saying Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do.
This is the death of Jesus.
