Benedict XVI: Bravery and Innovative Approach

Internet

The grace of Pope Benedict’s tenure transcends our categories of theological and practical evaluations, but largely I would argue he has measured up to the high expectations many in the Church had for him. That’s how Thomas Peters comments Benedict XVIth fifth anniversary as the universal Pastor of the Church. “In addition, he has undertaken extraordinary tasks - such as reunification with traditional Anglicans and the motu proprio promoting the Latin Mass - which have surprised even orthodox Catholics by his bravery and innovative approach,” Peters points out.

Nothing Else

Vatican

After completing the second volume of his work on Jesus of Nazareth, which is now in progress, Pope Benedict XVI will not write any more books, according to a report in the Italian daily Corriere della Sera. The American Jewish scholar Jacob Neusner reports that during a meeting with the Pontiff he asked about future writing projects. Neusner recalled: "With a smile, he answered: 'Nothing else. This is my last book. I have other things to do.'" Pope Benedict has been a prolific writer, producing more than 50 books and hundreds of essays.

St John Mary Vianney Travels Through Ireland

Ireland

In an apparent response to Pope Bendict’s March 19 pastoral letter on the Irish clerical abuse, the Irish bishops have arranged to have the relics of St. John Mary Vianney travel to four cities from April 25 to 28 for the veneration of the faithful. The Pontiff wrote: In this Year for Priests, I commend to you most particularly the figure of Saint John Mary Vianney, who had such a rich understanding of the mystery of the priesthood. “The priest”, he wrote, “holds the key to the treasures of heaven: it is he who opens the door: he is the steward of the good Lord; the administrator of his goods.”

That’s the Key: Prayer and Charity

Italy

After 42 years in the crypt of the Sanctuary of Santa Maria delle Grazie, St. Padre Pio's body was moved into the new St. Pio of Pietrelcina Church on Monday afternoon. Archbishop Michele Castoro of the Archdiocese of Manfredonia-Vieste-San Giovanni Rotondo, who had recently defended the need for the transfer, said during the celebration: "Padre Pio drew (people) to the road of holiness with his own witness, indicating by example the path that led to it: prayer and charity."
