Inchcolme South Cloister.

The monastery on Inchcolme Island was often attacked by English pirates, and so when the monastic buildings were rebuilt in the 14th century, they were rather defensive. The architecture is stout and rudimentary and this cloister range has a low barrel-vaulted ceiling, thick walls, and small windows. Isolated on an island in the middle of the Firth of Forth, the cloister of Inchcolme is a world away from the light, open cloisters of the Mediterranean.
