CATHOLIC CHURCH - Funeral of Pope Pius XII - El funeral del Papa Pío XII.

October 10, 1958, the body of Pope Pius XII is transferred in solemn procession through the streets of Rome from the Castel Sant'Angelo to lie in state in Saint Peter's Basilica. Hundreds of thousands ordinary Catholics join cardinals, bishops, priests, religious, and the civil and military authorities of Italy in paying final honors to the great Pope. Among the vast sea of mourners where all the Papal military units, the stately Palatine Guard, the horse mounted Noble Guard, the Papal Gendarmes, and the colorful Swiss Guard. Witness the piety and vitality of the Church placed by Our Lord in the hands of Pope Pius' successor Pope John XXIII. What a stark difference from the funerals of Popes John Paul I and II. At the outbreak of the Second World War in September 1939 the Palatine Guard mustered some 500 men, but by the liberation of Rome in June 1944 the corps had grown to 2000 men. In 1970, Pope Paul VI unilaterally disbanded the Guard as part of the wrecking of the Church that followed the highly controversial and divisive Second Vatican Council. The former members of Guard were invited to join a new, demilitarized group called simply the Saints Peter and Paul Association (Italian: Associazione SS. Pietro e Paolo), whose statutes were approved by Paul VI on 24 April 1971. That same year, and much to the great sorrow of the Catholic World, Pope Paul VI also disbanded two other Vatican military units: the Noble Guard, or papal horse guards; and the Papal Gendarmes, or Vatican Police. Only the Corps of the Pontifical Swiss Guard or Swiss Guard survived as a very small military force responsible for the personal safety of the Pope, and the security of the Apostolic Palace. Thus, were glorious military units, steeped in Tradition and which had so faithfully given voluntary and valiant service to the Church and to the Holy See snuffed out. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Join Una Voce Miami!
