Disappointment over Cardinal Schönborn

Austrian Cardinal Christoph Schönborn has attacked the dean of the College of Cardinals Angelo Sodano, saying that Sodano “deeply wronged” the victims of sexual abuse by Catholic clergy when he dismissed media reports of the scandal. Asked if he thought celibacy was one of the causes of clerical sex abuse, Cardinal Schönborn said he had no answer. Thomas Peters comments on his blog: “How could he say he does not know if a priestly discipline as established as celibacy could be responsible for the gravest abuses of priestly authority and trust?!” Peters concludes: “Cardinal Schonborn used to be my favorite potential pick for becoming pope one day. Not anymore.”

For the past two weeks, the worshipers from a mosque in Charleroi, Belgium were left without a place of worship. Now, until May 15th, it's the Catholic Church of Saint Lambert in Jumet which is hosting the Muslim worshipers. Opening the church of Saint Lambert to Muslim worshipers was done with the agreement of the local Dean. The church priest, Henry Rémy (89), says this is a natural gesture towards believers, and that he would be happy if he saw as many people in his services as he did in the Muslim services.

A Step Closer to the Ordination of Female Bishops

The Church of England has inched closer to the ordination of women bishops with the release of draft legislation on May 8 that would make it “lawful for the General Synod to make provision by Canon for enabling a woman to be consecrated to the office of bishop.” The legislation will be debated in July.

The Benedictine Monks of Glenstal Abbey, County Limerick, have gone into the hand-made chocolate business with a range of dessert and liqueur chocolate truffles to delight the taste buds. According to Brother Fintan Lyon: "Only a few retail shops in Ireland sell them. They are mostly an export item and they sell in Germany and America. They sell very well in the monastery. The Glenstal chocolates retail for €9.95 per box. Glenstal Abbey is home to a community of 40 monks. In 2000 the monastery launched “The Glenstal Book of Prayer”, which went on to break all known Irish book-publishing records when it sold a staggering 150,000 copies in Ireland in less than six months.
