Saints depicted in Cologne Cathedral

Hermann Joseph of Steinfeld

Hermann Joseph, priest, monk, and mystic, was born in Cologne in the twelfth century and died in either 1241 or 1252. According to legend, when Hermann was a young boy he offered an apple to an image of the Virgin and Child in a Cologne church. When the Christ Child gracefully accepted the apple, Hermann knew that it was his vocation to become a priest. Visions such as these continued throughout his life. He is generally depicted either as a boy or a Premonstratensian monk.
