Father Gerhard Wagner whom Pope Benedict XVI has unsuccessfully tried to appoint as an auxiliary bishop of the Austrian diocese of Linz is back in his parish – the Austrian state TV has reported. Sunday night, after heavy campaigning by liberal pressure groups, Father Wagner has asked the Pope to withdraw the appointment. Among others, the liberal Austrian bishops under Cardinal Christoph Schönborn have strongly opposed the nomination. In front of the camera, Father Wagner said to have been personally hurt by “uncharitable and merciless attacks” especially those coming from the side of priests. In the recent fight against his person, Father Wagner received an enormous support from his parish where the successful priest is very loved.
