Cardinal Gerhard Müller reflects in the newspaper Die Tagespost on December 4 on the 60th anniversary of Vatican II. He claims that debates about the interpretation of the Council have significantly shaped the faith of many Catholics since the 1960s [while in reality, Cathoilcs simply vanished]. The Cardinal notes that both “traditionalist” and “progressivist” approaches can misinterpret the Council: the former want to go behind the Council, while the latter seek to move beyond it. He argues that the Council itself distinguishes between the unchangeable substance of Catholic doctrine, liturgy, and Church constitution, and the "changeable" forms of expression or liturgical practice. According to him, both “sterile conservatism” and unfounded modernism misunderstand this distinction.
