Forty years after the scandalous Assisi meeting of 1986, Pope Leo XIV will take part in its anniversary gathering. On October 27, Leo XIV will travel to Assisi for the 40th anniversary of the World Day of Prayer for Peace convened by Pope John Paul II in 1986. Back then, a Buddha statue was placed on the tabernacle. The 2026 gathering, titled “Disarmed and Disarming Peace,” will bring together 384 representatives of religions, cultures and institutions from 53 countries. Leo XIV will preside over the Christian prayer for peace in the Lower Basilica together with Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew, while representatives of other religions will pray separately in different locations to their idols. The religious leaders will then gather in the Piazza Inferiore outside the Basilica of Saint Francis for the concluding ceremony and message of peace.

A 17-year-old Dutch girl was killed by euthanasia after doctors concluded that she was experiencing “unbearable and hopeless psychological suffering”. Milou Verhoof died on 2 October 2023 after suffering from mental-health problems for years and undergoing repeated treatments. Her case was later examined by the Netherlands’ Regional Euthanasia Review Committees, which found that the doctor had complied with the country’s legal requirements for euthanasia.
