Marking 100 years since the founding of the Pontifical Institute of Christian Archaeology, he described the discipline as “indispensable for understanding Christianity”: “Revelation is always history. If this is so, then understanding Revelation requires an adequate knowledge of the historical, cultural and material contexts in which it took place,” he wrote.
