Saturnino Lohure - A Hero for South Sudan.
(2012) “A Hero for South Sudan” – 12’47”
Father Saturnino Lohure, a native of the Torit area in what is now South Sudan, was born in 1921 into the Lotuko tribe and baptised at age ten by the Comboni missionaries. He was subsequently ordained in 1946. In learning about slavery and the slave trade he saw parallels in the way the south was governed. Jurisdiction over Torit and the South was in the hands of Arab leaders in Khartoum who neglected the needs of Southerners, looking down upon them with prejudice.
Father Saturnino made it his life’s mission to protect and secure the religious and civil freedoms of his people. When the Sudan gained independence from Britain and Egypt in 1956, with permission from the Holy See, he represented Torit in the Khartoum parliament. The debate over a federal system for the South fell apart when the parliament was disbanded by the military. Father Saturnino subsequently went into exile where he became one of the …More

Director: Agnieszka Dzieduszycka This documentary considers the historical presence of the Church in Syria - reflected in such sites as the place where Elijah is said to have ascended to heaven - and the manner in which these roots are lived out in the present day Church. The program considers, through interviews with personalities such as Archbishop George Battikha (Patriarchal Vicar of the Greek-Melkite Catholic Patriarchate of Damascus), the difficulties not only in living in a Muslim society but also the challenges faced by the Christian communities to overcome their differences as they work towards unity. The program touches on the signs of hope as well, for example, the young people and, despite the difficulties of living in a Muslim society, the …More

Excellent presentation.
I read description of the Burmese Catholic Church the history of which is as old as the first European nation came to Asia - the Portuguese. These communities are a few hundred years old, and have not had the benefit of being ministered by Priests and Bishops for years. The situation is similar to the Korean, Chinese and Japanese Catholics who carried on the faith in spite of the lack of Priests in some instances for several hundreds of years.
The Asian countries produced countless martyrs for the Cross bravely gone to their deaths refusing to deny Our Lord and Our Lady in the face of extreme persecutions.
As a Thai I understand them, and my heart goes out to them.

Director: David Jones Burma, recently renamed Myanmar, is still today one of the most remote countries in the world. Until recently, neighbouring Thailand received more visitors in one day than Myanmar in one year. With a population of about 48 million, 85% are Buddhist. Many believe Buddha was born here and evidence suggests that Buddhism existed as early as 200 B.C. Today the state religion, it visibly permeates all aspects of life. Monks in vermilion colour the streets and the country boasts over 51000 monasteries and temples. Unfortunately, despite Buddhism's apparently gentle face, Myanmar's history is racked by violence and poverty. Director: Agnes Dzieduszycka In April 1994, in the heart of Africa, genocide took place on an unprece-dented scale. Little Rwanda became an arena of slaughter, where the more numerous Hutu tribes murdered nearly a million Tutsi's and moderate Hutus. Neighbours, friends, members of the same family, became enemies overnight - within a hundred days eight hundred thousand people lost their lives, whiles many more millions were forced to flee and to hide. Even the habit proved no defence against persecution, despite up to sixty percent of Rwanda's population being Catholic. Novices from the Convent of the Good Shepherd, engaged in helping the needy in the vicinity of the capital Kigali, were to find that the war did not spare them.

The Macedonian Catholic Church, once again free, is flourishing. Although the fruits are abundant, the trials facing the Church have not yet been laid to rest. A new challenge has arisen, arguably subtler and of greater threat than that experienced under communism: Where faith was once brutally oppressed, today young Macedonians willingly abandon their faith drawn to the allure of materialism. Catholics are a minority. In a state, which numbers over two million inhabitants, the majority is Orthodox.
