Harvey "brings out the best in people" as Texas parish copes with severe flooding

Frank Kurtz) VIEW PHOTO GALLERY 3 photos AA DICKINSON, Texas — Hurricane Harvey has proven to be a catastrophic event for thousands in and around the Houston area, including the suburb of Dickinson, Texas. Fr. Frank Kurtz, the prior of Queen of Angels Catholic Church in Dickinson and a Kansas City-area native, said the storms have impacted his parish. "It did get into the offices and the school and the bookstore, and we have an outbuilding and storage area - it did get in there," he said. While the damage to the church grounds was significant, parish families were hit even harder. Fr. Kurtz said several families had to be evacuated via rescue boats and have taken shelter at the church. The Dickinson pastor said the floods proved to be fatal for his parish, claiming the life of a man who drowned as he attempted to travel to Sunday Mass. The church sits just half a mile from the Dickinson Bayou, which rose out of its banks and flooded the area. While the water had receded Sunday, it was reported Monday as rising, resulting in a mandatory evacuation of the area. While the situation remains desperate for his parish, Fr. Kurtz said a community willingness to extend a helping hand has been evident. "Events like this sometimes bring out the best in people," he said. The Dickinson area received 15-20 inches of rain from 10 p.m. Saturday - 6 a.m. Sunday. Some water entered the school and bookstore, flooding the floors, carpets and lower shelves. Thankfully, Fr.
