Francis Preaches Unhealthy, Sentimental Philosophy

Pope Francis claims in his message for the World Day of Social Communications (January 24) that the truth - allegedly - depends on subjective feelings.

He makes the following [wrong] statement: “An impeccable argument can rest on undeniable facts, but if it is used to hurt another and to discredit that person in the eyes of others, however correct it may appear, it is not truthful”, adding, “We can recognize the truth of statements from their fruits.”

According to a sane philosophy, truth is the correspondence of the intellect with reality. Subjective intentions can have all kinds of negative effects but they don’t change the veracity of an argument.

Perhaps you can defend the following rude, judgmental and unchristian comments so that we all can take his side as well? 👌
If you cannot, then can we conclude that the pope is nothing more than a

Don Reto Nay What labels others may put on a statement one cannot control. What offence they may take is also beyond one's control. All one can control is one's own intention. If in speaking the truth one intends to deliberately hurt or demean another for the very purpose of hurting or demeaning (which I must presume our Lord would not do), then one's commitment to the truth is a sham and one's understanding of the truth shallow. Real truth, as opposed to the mere facts, demands a commitment to love the other and therefore to seek a way to speak the truth in a way that the other can hear it (having spent fifteen years in education (chaplain) that's often what one ends up doing).

I think we need to set aside the issue of who is speaking (HF) from the truth of what is said. The present HF is quite the contrast to his predecessors but that does not make all he says unacceptable and in this matter, as I understand him, I take his side.

@BrTomFordeOFMCap : If you use Our Lord as an example for speaking "in love" then I agree with you. However, according to "modern" standards, many things he said, would be considered "hate-speech", precisely because one wants to distract from the truth of the matter.

Pope Francis, when you sometimes confuse catholics with what you say and do ,you words coming from you get lost and sounds empty

Matt. 7:4, "You hypocrite, first take the log out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to take the speck out of your brother’s eye."
Matt. 15:7, "You hypocrites, rightly did Isaiah prophesy of you, saying, 8 ‘This people honors Me with their lips, But their heart is far away from Me." 9 ‘But in vain do they worship Me, Teaching as doctrines the precepts of men.’”
Matt. 23:13, "But woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites, because you shut off the kingdom of heaven from men; for you do not enter in yourselves, nor do you allow those who are entering to go in."
Matt. 23:15, "Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites..."
Matt. 23:16-17, "Woe to you, blind guides, who say, ‘Whoever swears by the temple, that is nothing; but whoever swears by the gold of the temple, he is obligated.’ 17 “You fools and blind men; which is more important, the gold, or the temple that sanctified the gold?"
Matt. 23:23-24, "Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you tithe mint and dill and cummin, and have neglected the weightier provisions of the law: justice and mercy and faithfulness; but these are the things you should have done without neglecting the others. 24 “You blind guides, who strain out a gnat and swallow a camel!"
Matt. 23:25, "“Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites!"
Matt. 23:27-28, "Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! Matt. 23:33, "You serpents, you brood of vipers, how shall you escape the sentence of hell?"
Mark 12:38-40, "Beware of the scribes who like to walk around in long robes, and like respectful greetings in the market places, 39 and chief seats in the synagogues, and places of honor at banquets, 40 who devour widows’ houses, and for appearance’s sake offer long prayers; these will receive greater condemnation."
Luke 11:39, "You foolish ones, did not He who made the outside make the inside also?"
Luke 11:43, "Woe to you Pharisees! For you love the front seats in the synagogues, and the respectful greetings in the market places. 44 “Woe to you! For you are like concealed tombs, and the people who walk over them are unaware of it."
Luke 11:52, "Woe to you lawyers! For you have taken away the key of knowledge; you did not enter in yourselves, and those who were entering in you hindered."
Luke 12:1, "Beware of the leaven of the Pharisees, which is hypocrisy."

John 8:49, "I do not have a demon; but I honor My Father, and you dishonor Me."
John 8:55, "and you have not come to know Him, but I know Him; and if I say that I do not know Him, I shall be a liar like you, but I do know Him, and keep His word."

Today love has been replaced by sentimentalism in the minds of too many holy rollers. Saying harsh things to people is not wrong in itself when it's done with wisdom. Indeed, it is sometimes necessary to be harsh. Isn't that right Pope? thatthebonesyouhavecrushedmaythrill.blogspot.com/…/the-pope-franci…

The only thing 'hurt' or 'discredited' by Truth is un-Truth.

John 6, On hearing it [Jesus' words], many of his disciples said, “This is a hard teaching. Who can accept it?” Aware that his disciples were grumbling about this, Jesus said to them, “Does this offend you?"

Don Reto Nay I do not disagree but in the context of the message the Pope is talking about using truth to deliberately harm others. Speaking the truth can never be divorced from love. @BrTomFordeOFMCap : I believe it is more complicated than that. 1) Look at the comment of Dr Bobus; 2) It can be very convenient to blame those who search for the truth and speak it out, of being "demeaning others", only because they are doing nothing else than saying the truth (which we perhaps hate).

The fact is that the truth is independent from the person who pronounces it. Even if the biggest criminal proclaims a truth, the truth remains a truth. Otherwise we would always have a fitting excuse to refuse a truth by blaming the messenger. The truth is always bigger than the one who pronounces it.

We can recognize the truth of statements from their fruits: whether they provoke quarrels, foment division, encourage resignation; or, on the other hand, they promote informed and mature reflection leading to constructive dialogue and fruitful results."

I do not think this is an insane philosophy. Rather he is arguing that using the truth in order to hurt or demean others is an abuse of the truth and therefore reveals our lack of respect for the truth. We are using the truth, or the facts, as a means to a selfish end not as an end in itself.

If we cannot speak the truth in love we should keep our mouths shut.
Dr Bobus
Ironic that such a comment would come from someone who regularly insults those who disagree with him.
