Pro-Gay Bishop Gebhard Fürst of Rottenburg-Stuttgart and neoconservative Bishop Stephan Burger of Freiburg oppose Cardinal Marx' idea to bless gay couples.
Fürst told the Deutsche Presse-Agentur (February 19) that a liturgical blessing is never a private ceremony and gay blessings would always give the impression of being a quasi sacrament. He stressed however that he accepts civil gay unions "entirely" and that gay couples should "receive pastoral care".
Burger's spokesman told the public that there cannot be a blessing of gay couples, adding, that the Catholic Church rejects treating marriage and gay liaisons as equivalents.
The statements of these two bishops are largely ornamental as gay blessings are already performed in Germany and the bishops do not intervene against them.
