"Relations between Church and State in Bolivia remain formal and cold" Bishop Ricardo Centellas of Potosí, Bolivia, said to El Mercurio (August 20). Pope Francis visited Bolivia in 2015 during which Bolivian president Evo Morales gave him a "cross" in the form of a Communist hammer and sickle. According to Bishop Centellas the visit had no positive impact on the Church-state relation. During a 2016 visit in the Vatican, Morales recommended to Francis to consume coca leaves and gave him three books about the topic. He presently presses for the introduction of abortion and gender ideology.
