Dante's Divine Comedy 'offensive and should be banned'
The classic work should be removed from school curricula, according to Gherush 92, a human rights organisation which acts as a consultant to UN bodies on racism and discrimination.
Dante's epic is "offensive and discriminatory" and has no place in a modern classroom, said Valentina Sereni, the group's president.
Divided into three parts – Hell, Purgatory and Heaven – the poem consists of 100 cantos, of which half a dozen were marked out for particular criticism by the group.
It represents Islam as a heresy and Mohammed as a schismatic and refers to Jews as greedy, scheming moneylenders and traitors, Miss Sereni told the Adnkronos news agency.
"The Prophet Mohammed was subjected to a horrific punishment – his body was split from end to end so that his entrails dangled out, an image that offends Islamic culture," she said.

It is a masterpiece and a must for anybody pretending to have a minimum culture, like it or not. Feel free to not read it. And feel free to read other masterpieces (or even junk) that are not very soft on other religions, which I'm sure you do. What happened with the ultra-liberal 'freedom of choice'?

I have this little idea. You see, I find Hustler to be offensive - I don’t read it, I don’t look at it, and I don’t allow it in my house. The same can be said about any number of other books, including the Koran.
But, will I rush out and prohibit another person from reading any of the books I have rejected? No, because I extend to others, the same freedoms I claim for myself.
Somehow, these dictator-wannabe’s cannot grasp this very simple, very basic principle. This isn’t a quest to “Improve Mankind”, but a grasp of power, domination and establishing themselves as a Lord over others.
