In an op-ed for The Advocate, Vice President Joe Biden is praising Ireland for voting to recognize gay marriage, and encouraged the United States to do the same.

“In 22 years, Ireland has gone from a nation where simply being LGBT was against the law to a nation where the people resoundingly stand for equal rights,” he said glowingly.

Biden also pointed out that the United States now recognized gay marriage in 37 states, up from just six states six years ago.

“It’s about love. It’s about equality. It’s about dignity. It’s about our most cherished values,” he wrote. “That’s what this is about — it’s all it’s ever been about.”

Biden criticized states still opposed to gay marriage, and called on all LGBT activists to continue working to change the definition of marriage.

He concluded: “It takes courageous individuals who are willing to step forward, to turn adversity into positive change, and to truly live the words of the great Irish poet William Butler Yeats: ‘Do not wait to strike till the iron is hot, but make it hot by striking.’”
