How is the Graphene Flagship funded?

The 2D-EPL and 13 Graphene Flagship Projects are funded by the European Commission, which corresponds to 50 percent of the budget of the whole initiative, while the remaining 50 percent is expected to be financed through Partnering Projects at the regional, national or transnational level. The Partnering Projects and Associate Members do not receive funding from the Graphene or 2D-EPL Project budgets.

Initial EU funding came from the 7th Framework programme (FP7) in the ramp-up phase. The first ten years of the Graphene Flagship were then funded by Horizon 2020 the financial instrument implementing the Innovation Union, a Europe 2020 flagship initiative aimed at securing Europe's global competitiveness.

The Graphene Flagship initiative is now funded by Horizon Europe, the EU’s key funding programme for research and innovation with a budget of €95.5 billion of which roughly €62.5 million is allocated to the Graphene Flagship projects.

What is Horizon Europe?

The programme facilitates collaboration and strengthens the impact of research and innovation in developing, supporting and implementing EU policies while tackling global challenges. It creates jobs, fully engages the EU’s talent pool, boosts economic growth, promotes industrial competitiveness and optimises investment impact within a strengthened European Research Area.

European Commission signs €150M grant funding the Graphene Flagship

The European Commission (EC) has signed the €150M grant agreement to continue funding the Graphene Flagship's research and innovation on graphene and related materials from 1 April 2020 to 31 March 2023. With this signature, the EC continues its commitment to support the €1B Graphene Flagship project, which began in 2013.

Graphene Flagship launches first European 'Pilot Line'

Funded by the European Commission, this €20 million project will enable large volume production of electronic devices based on two-dimensional materials. The goal of this ambitious undertaking is to demonstrate how to manufacture and scale up the production of devices based on 2D materials for market applications. This is a crucial step before graphene technologies can be transferred to full scale manufacturing.
