In 1976 when Carter was elected one of his administration's primary goals was to remove the SHAH by the end of his term. That was top priority.
Here are the main reasons:
1. OIL: Many Americans do not realize that in 1976 America was under severe economic pressure and losing an economic battle to OPEC (spearheaded by the most brilliant foreign policy leader the SHAH himself). In fact in a very short time the SHAH had turned Iran into the 5th most economically and militarily strong nation in the world. Oil prices in America were at an all time high and gas stations had lines for miles due to oil shortages and high oil prices.
2. The cold war : The US wanted a fanatically religious Iranian government to support the Afghanistan rebels once their plan to force the Russians to invade Afghanistan took effect
3. Nuclear power: The SHAH was actively working to make IRAN nuclear capable and the US was actively ensuring this would never happen under any circumstances
4. Balance of Power: US and British foreign policy agenda has always been a maintenance of a balance of power, meaning no nation should ever become so strong and independent that it could become a threat, such as Germany did in 1939. This is why the CIA and the British supported an extremist religious government instead of the SHAH, because this would send Iran into the Middle Ages and ensure it would be just another 3rd world country. To make this more understandable, imagine reversing the roles. Imagine if the SHAH's govt. supported and helped place the KKK at the head of the US government. Probably would be an economic and political nightmare for Americans as the Mullahs are for Iranians currently.
No book better helps explain how all these were achieved by the underhanded removal of the SHAH in what is truly the most devious, deceitful back stabbing act of treachery ever inflicted upon a nation. Mr. Dreyfuss is a highly intelligent writer and is not afraid to tell the truth of what really happened in 1979. Don't miss on this one !
Here's a representative sample of the tripe you can find in this book:
"So far, we have found that the "Islamic fundamentalist revolution" that seized power in February 1979 was instigated by British Petroleum, was given crucial assistance by a NATO general, forged a continuing alliance with the "Satan" government of the United States, and is heavily penetrated by the Israeli secret intelligence service. Now we answer the question: who is the Ayatollah Khomeini?"
For a superb book on the ACTUAL hostage crisis, read "Guests of the Ayatollah", by Mark Bowden. I wouldn't use this book to level a piano.
At the time this book was written it was a ground-breaking look at how completely Middle East politics has been run as a British colonial plantation with dumb Americans chiming in as geopolitical scapegoats for several post-FDR decades. It rings true today more than 25 years later as the Dick Cheney beats the drums for a British-inspired tune entitled 'Nuke Iran.'
