If you want to know what is going on in the middle east, and specifically what happened to turn Iran from THE staunchest US ally in the world to a declared enemy, then this book is a must read.

Finally a book that is not afraid to spit the truth. Just like we will never prove the CIA and the military establishment conspired to eliminate JFK in a coup d'etat, we will also never prove the fact that the CIA and the British were behind the removal of the SHAH of Iran in 1979. Unfortunately, the average person thinks the 1979 revolution was a people's revolution, however nothing is further from the truth. It was engineered and orchestrated brilliantly by the US and British governments, and anyone who thinks this is hogwash or not possible is just plain naive.

In 1976 when Carter was elected one of his administration's primary goals was to remove the SHAH by the end of his term. That was top priority.

Here are the main reasons:

1. OIL: Many Americans do not realize that in 1976 America was under severe economic pressure and losing an economic battle to OPEC (spearheaded by the most brilliant foreign policy leader the SHAH himself). In fact in a very short time the SHAH had turned Iran into the 5th most economically and militarily strong nation in the world. Oil prices in America were at an all time high and gas stations had lines for miles due to oil shortages and high oil prices.

2. The cold war : The US wanted a fanatically religious Iranian government to support the Afghanistan rebels once their plan to force the Russians to invade Afghanistan took effect

3. Nuclear power: The SHAH was actively working to make IRAN nuclear capable and the US was actively ensuring this would never happen under any circumstances

4. Balance of Power: US and British foreign policy agenda has always been a maintenance of a balance of power, meaning no nation should ever become so strong and independent that it could become a threat, such as Germany did in 1939. This is why the CIA and the British supported an extremist religious government instead of the SHAH, because this would send Iran into the Middle Ages and ensure it would be just another 3rd world country. To make this more understandable, imagine reversing the roles. Imagine if the SHAH's govt. supported and helped place the KKK at the head of the US government. Probably would be an economic and political nightmare for Americans as the Mullahs are for Iranians currently.

No book better helps explain how all these were achieved by the underhanded removal of the SHAH in what is truly the most devious, deceitful back stabbing act of treachery ever inflicted upon a nation. Mr. Dreyfuss is a highly intelligent writer and is not afraid to tell the truth of what really happened in 1979. Don't miss on this one !

This is one of the worst attempts at non-fiction I've ever read. It is a completely ridiculous amalgamation of conspiracy theories that blames the U.S. Embassy hostage crisis in Tehran on a collusion of the Freemasons, the U.S. Council on Foreign Relations, the Carter administration, British Oligarchs, the Mossad, and many, many others. Lyndon LaRouche commissioned the writing of this book, and while I don't know much him, I suspect that many of the absurd views held by the author mirror LaRouche's. Also, the author worked at the Executive Intelligence Review so often cited in this 'book' (and I use the term loosely), which LaRouche founded and directs. EIR is presented as a serious news source, although I can't imagine it is anything other than a mouthpiece for his views.

Here's a representative sample of the tripe you can find in this book:

"So far, we have found that the "Islamic fundamentalist revolution" that seized power in February 1979 was instigated by British Petroleum, was given crucial assistance by a NATO general, forged a continuing alliance with the "Satan" government of the United States, and is heavily penetrated by the Israeli secret intelligence service. Now we answer the question: who is the Ayatollah Khomeini?"

For a superb book on the ACTUAL hostage crisis, read "Guests of the Ayatollah", by Mark Bowden. I wouldn't use this book to level a piano.

If you have not read this book you do not really know much of importance about the origins of terrorism and how the seemingly endless conflicts in the Middle East came about. It did not start in 'Biblical times' as is often asserted but in colonial times--with the emphasis on British colonial manipulations.

At the time this book was written it was a ground-breaking look at how completely Middle East politics has been run as a British colonial plantation with dumb Americans chiming in as geopolitical scapegoats for several post-FDR decades. It rings true today more than 25 years later as the Dick Cheney beats the drums for a British-inspired tune entitled 'Nuke Iran.'

The history of these lands is so complex that his book are a welcome sigh of relief: he writes clearly and shows the origins of the going ons. Learning the whys and hows of the development of that history DEFINITIVELY make you re-evaluate your attitudes toward many figureheads. The massive crossover of disciplines (intellectuals of all fields) that shaped the ideological/political developments of these lands (and eventually of the modern world) are bewildering. Any reader will be amazed to find out the interests/implications of freemason societies, media and government agents that took active roles.
