Blessed Micaela Hernán Martínez
Profile
The daughter of Benito, a merchant, and Micaela, young Micela was educated at a boarding school run by the Daughters of Charity of Saint Vincent de Paul. A member of the Daughters of Mary of the Miraculous Medal, a group centered on Marian spirituality, prayer and service. She worked at the hospice in Burgos, Spain, and joined the Daughters of Charity on 21 November 1901. Over the years she was assigned to the Provincial Hospital of Albacete, the Kindergarten of Jerez, Cocina y Comedor del Salvador in Jerez, the school of Polanco in Santander, and the Kindergarten of San Eugenio of Valencia; in all these posts she worked mainly with small children.
At the outbreak of the persecutions in the Spanish Civil War, the Daughters were outlawed by the Communists. Sister Rosario hid in Puzol, Spain with her religious sisters, Blessed Rosario Ciércoles Gascón, Blessed Maria Luisa Bermudez Ruiz, and a priest. They were captured on 17 August 1936, dragged before a show trial court, and executed for refusing to renounce her faith. Martyr.
