Madrid
A fake ‘Popemobile’ with a devil’s head set next to the driver led a phalanx of demonstrators through the streets of Madrid as thousands turned out to protest against a visit by Pope Benedict.
The focus of their anger was the amount of money the visit is costing the Spanish government at a time when the country is struggling with recession and sky high unemployment.
They carried placards with such slogans as ‘Papa don’t Preach’ – ‘God Yes, Church No’ – and ‘Not with my taxes!’

"I propose that there is a WORLD CLERGY DAY (WCD) in which bishops from around the world will meet and these same topics that have been directed at Catholic Youth would then be directed to Catholic Clerics.
Wouldn't the results of such a meeting have greater and more lasting effects for the entire Church than the current WYD?"
My sentiments exactly!

What would have greater and lasting effects on the Church would be to have about 100 St John Vianneys. These "bishops" could learn a lot from this humble saint. The power of the confession, Eucharist, devotional prayers, and orthodox homilies would unit our Church and give us back our heritage and identity as Roman Catholic. It will be the laity that restores all things in Christ, not the clergy.

I agree that few of the laity and even fewer of the clergy fear hell as was once the case and so the old reasons for demanding obedience would not work in 2011.
However, censure, excommunication etc. are not what I had in mind as being effective deterrents today. What is needed (from my view) in the Catholic Church today is a kinder, friendlier, less 'terminal' version of the Spanish Inquisition. …More

Finding the right person to head the “Pontifical Commission of Obedience and/or Torture” would be a problem but thankfully there is one name that immediately stands out......Doina.

@Cannoli - Since the old ways of punishment are based on a less than healthy fear of Hell-Fire, one wonders if they would be effective with today's Catholics, given that we no long have any fear whatsoever of the Devil.
Therefore, censure, excommunication, interdict, and all the rest of them just might not have the deterrent effect they used to have.

Wouldn't the results of such a meeting have greater and more lasting effects for the entire Church than the current WYD?

Subjects to be Discussed at World Clergy Day

1) Teach the Catholic faith unambiguously and unashamedly so that you will be a credit to the Catholic Church and not a liability. Order the preists in your diocese to do likewise.

2) Stop allowing homosexuals into the seminary as you've already been mandated not to do.

Finally, there will be swift consequences for any violators (God help you) of the above mandates.

Apparently, socialists still believe that wealth can only be distributed, rather than created, and that tourists and pilgrims only cost money.

If one reads the major American Catholic media outlets (except for Voris who has been attacked by the usual suspects) one would think that

Time will tell.

What is interesting here is that evidently, one must go to EuroNews sites or to non-Catholic sources for the story behind the story.
