Hanging in the Wind: David Shaneyfelt and Joseph Maher write in the “Homiletic and Pastoral Review” that insurance companies of the diocese will not defend a priest accused in the U.S. of sexual misconduct and the bishop is not required to defend him either, even if the priest is innocent. And: “Unless a priest has access to substantial funds, he will be unrepresented by counsel and left to twist in the wind.” According to Shaneyfelt and Maher so far over 1000 U.S. priests have been wrongly accused.
Dropping Innocent Priests: Shaneyfelt and Maher show that U.S. bishops have incentives to leave priests, also those wrongly accused of sexual abuses, hanging. Diocesan insurance coverage for defense payment is generally given complete control over that defense. Therefore the bishop must do whatever his insurance company-appointed lawyers say he must do. Bishops have tried to intervene on behalf of accused priests, only to be warned by their insurance company, “Don’t do that.” That is the reason why many bishops drop accused priests, even when they are innocent.
Saint John Vianney: Shaneyfelt and Maher remember that Saint John Vianney, the patron of parish priests, was himself subjected to spurious claims. He survived them. Shaneyfelt and Maher comment: “But that was then. It is doubtful he could have survived them today.” And – quote: “His accuser probably would have been paid some money.”
Innocent And Helpless: Shaneyfelt’s and Maher’s conclusion is alarming. According to them the interests of the insurance companies of the dioceses in the United States do not concern the accused priests even if he is innocent. Quote: “They do not, and cannot, do much to help him, now or in the future.”

O loving Mother Mary, Mother of Priests, take to your heart your son who is close to you because of his priestly ordination, and because of the power which he has received to carry on the work of Christ in a world which needs him so much.
Be his comfort, be his joy, be his strength, and especially help him to live and to defend the ideals of consecrated celibacy.
