Baby Homecoming (?), Providence Hospital, Oakland, California, ca. 1938
Silent film. Sisters of Providence leave in an automobile; then footage of mothers with children, and babies being weighed and examined in a clinic, likely as part of a "homecoming" wherein children who were born at a hospital were brought back for periodic check-ups (a documented practice at Providence hospitals in what was then Sacred Heart Province). Previously identified as Providence Hospital in Seattle; however, the small amounts of background shown make the film much more likely taken in Oakland. There are palms visible, and one of the houses shown compares favorably with a house that appears in a still photograph of the construction of the hospital in 1926. Vas Insigne Devotionis, Echoes of Ephesus.
Composed and sung by the Benedictines of Mary, Queen of Apostles in Gower Missouri, Vas Insigne Devotionis originated with the "Mother Prioress (who) often tells the community to think of themselves as vessels in Our Lady's hands to receive the Mercy and Grace coming from Our Lord's pierced side. Taking the title from the Litany of Loreto, two nuns teamed up to write this piece in 2006 for Mother Prioress' 25th anniversary of vows. It is an honour Our Lady, the Vessel of Divine Election, while it underlines the vocation of each Benedictine of Mary." - Intro to the song from the Echoes of Ephesus CD booklet.
