The Peruvian naturalization file of Robert Prevost preserves a handwritten letter in which he expressed his desire to remain in Peru “for the rest of my life.” The documentation, held by Peru’s National Superintendency of Migration, records the process through which the American-born Prevost obtained Peruvian citizenship in 2015 after years of pastoral work in the country. Democratic Governor Maura Healey, a "Catholic", signed the law on August 10. Massachusetts bishops opposed the legislation, but no canonical penalties, including excommunication, have followed. He was celebrating a Eucharist inside the historic Cathedral Basilica of Manizales when the violent shaking began.
