Miller says, “pushing little particles of dirt around in an egg yolk emulsion to create beauty blends everything that I’m about. I love nature, I love life, and I love God. The ancient Orthodox style is one of the highest resonances of beauty for me. I never get tired of this magnificent medium and mysterious content that is expressed.” Full Collection | Misitio

Icon painting
Her books about Iconography offer a deep theologically based discourse on iconography. Catholic, Episcopalian, Orthodox, and traditional Christian perspectives are diverse yet have a commonality in Christ’s teachings. This collection of books on Iconography challenges our understanding of traditional and modern/contemporary arts and the theology within that has endured. Her

Painting Hands in Sacred art

Hand of God
The motif of the hand, with no body attached, found in the corners of feast day icons, is both curious and delightful. The addition of a small hand to the icon is a simple and straightforward way to express God's presence in all things. God is always present and constantly accessible. The single painted hand in iconography at the top symbolizes God. This hand includes the hand of Christ already depicted in the event. It emerges from a small cloud, or an abstracted quarter circle trimmed in red, white, or black. Usually, part of the forearm is shown with an extended hand, an open palm, or sometimes with the fingers spread, palm down. Painting Hands in Iconography - San Miguel Icons

Mother of Seven sorrows

A sword did pierced my soul when I decided to break step with Orthodox Iconography and use the practice to examine humanities relationship with Mother Earth. Change is upon us; every nation is affected, and every society feels the consequences of unbridled greed and waste. I believe we live on Holy Ground, even with climate change and the anxiety it may provoke. We are still miles from the idea that we could go extinct like the dinosaurs. Humanity thinks it is the last revelation of God, and eternal. Yet humans are just one more evolution happening over millennia.

How small are we and who small is the mind that sees it?

WAR,... when is it going to be enough? Weapons don't work. We might try putting 12 leaders in a room and pay them each $10 million, and say they cannot leave until a peaceful solution is agreed on. It would be better than devastation. Communication is everything and one of our most prized assets as humans.

Trump pulled the US out of the arms treaty agreement, which prohibited selling guns to countries in turmoil. The act of supplying weapons to nations in turmoil propagates war crimes. The impact of guns flowing into Mexico over the past 5 years is a crime against humanity. Selling guns to hot headed frustrated people is a war crime. The easier it is for any nation’s citizens to buy guns, the better it is for the gun industry in America. The National Rifle Association is a cancer corrupting and aggravating the lifestyle of people around the world. Their propaganda began and continues to prosper in the USA and is a crime against God and humanity.

Weapons are Big Business Outside the US - San Miguel Icons

The National Rifle Association should stick to rifles that shoot at a deer or a duck with one bullet and stop defending our right to own assault rifles in our homes. The NRA does not support the Patriot Act. No country needs rapid fire weapons on hand to attack what they do not like. Human dignity has been losing ground over the past few decades because weapons are Big Business Outside the US.
Our un-ethical behavior is leading us all away from a state of well being. We have become vulnerable to the behaviors of those who bear arms. I want to ask where these weapons have been coming from. The NRA is big business outside the US. Their memberships’ agenda is not driven by spirit or peace in the world but rather by money and power.
If God is alive in us, how can we not feel a good bit of shame and sadness for the development of the gun industry and the war machines our taxes support. All rapid fire guns are designed to murder, traumatize, injure, hurt, destroy, assault, ravish, violate …

Angels Do Not need weapons

US spent $17.9 BILLION on military aid to Israel since the war in Gaza, a land mass of 25 miles. Think about this,... you would think there is nothing left, no buildings or people, So who is making the money on the war? With that much money, we could incarcerate the leaders and force them to talk peace instead of mass killing and destruction.

Icon painting technique | Mary Jane Miller Icons | Guanajuato

Mary Jane Miller has been steeped in the byzantine style egg tempera icon painting tradition since 1980. It is not easy to be driven by something you can’t see, to become completely absorbed by a desire you’re afraid to follow or ignore. In her studio, painting, patience and prayer are the every day format. Iconographers live and work in a sort of double dimension where time and space are distorted, image and content change reality, and solitude speaks volumes. Miller and her spouse Valentin Gomez, are both self-taught and have been quietly working together for 25 years... Workshops...
Valentin works in the repoussé technique and I design and paint. Living in Mexico, our dream is to add a few more icons to those existing in the world, hoping that this great sacred art tradition will continue in liturgy and prayer for a long time to come. The technique and egg tempera medium enabled us to realize something quite intimate about God, that is, “we create as we are created”. In their hearts …
