Exaltation of the Holy Cross.
"O wonderful cross, upon whose branches hung the treasure and redemption of captive men, through you the world is redeemed by the blood of the Lord." The Feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross, celebrated every year on the 14th of September, recalls the finding of the True Cross by St Helena, mother of the emperor Constantine, and the subsequent dedication of the Basilica built by Constantine on the site of the Holy Sepulchre and Mount Calvary, near where the Cross had been found. This Russian icon, now housed in the Hillwood Estate in Washington DC, depicts the dedication of the Basilica, with St Helena and Constantine looking on.
