St Aidan of Lindisfarne.

In 635, an Anglo Saxon monk called Aidan came from his monastery of Iona and, at the request of King Oswald of Northumbria, he founded a monastery on Lindisfarne. He is shown, in this statue on Lindisfarne carrying the torch of the Christian faith, which shone like a light on the people of Northumbria, thanks to his holy life and preaching. A great priory once stood on Lindisfarne, and from here the monks evangelized the North, and produced beautiful works of Christian art and culture, notably the famed Lindisfarne Gospels. In the background is the 16th-century castle of Lindisfarne.
