Silhouette of a Friar.

Fray Luis de León (1527-1591) is the best representative of the school of Salamanca which flourished in the Renaissance. His translation of the Song of Songs into Spanish from the Hebrew instead of the Latin of the Vulgate, which he criticised, entangled him in the Spanish Inquisition by which he was imprisoned in Vallodolid in March 1572. He was not released until December 1576, when he returned to Salamanca and famously began his lecture with the words: "As I was saying yesterday"! This statue of the Augustinian friar, seen as a symbol of academic freedom, stands in the centre of the main Patio of Salamanca University.
