One line from the USCCB’s statement on Monsignor Jeffrey Burrill’s resignation has bothered me: they state he is resigning “in order to avoid becoming a distraction.” Fidelity to your priestly vows seems much more than a “distraction”: it’s an important aspect of being a priest and leading as a priest in the Church. We should see celibacy as more than a “distraction.”

Amen, Father!! You're probably going to need a moment or two to collect yourself when you see all these comments agreeing with you! LOL! Well said. Priests should emulate the virtues of their magnificent calling, a sign of the Life to come and a role model on how one arrives there. Otherwise they should retire to a life of prayer and conversion. After all, they hold in their hands at the Altar each day the all-Holy God Himself, Our Lord Jesus Christ. Thank you!

P.S. And I absolutely agree Priests who are innocent should be proven so, not simply removed to "avoid distraction". The latter looks like an admission of guilt and simply leaves the moral scandal for the faithful in place.
