What's surprising about this film is that, if you give it a chance, it has a very modern sensibility despite the medieval setting; the knight playing Death isn't trying to extend life, just to find answers to God's silence, while his atheistic squire sees no reason for living at all. The knight does not defeat Death--who could?--but tricks him to spare an innocent family. It's a magically powerful modern fable if you consider it in that light.
