Father Dan Brandt, a Chicago police chaplain, expressed his mortification for having “mistakenly” handed out Communion to the non-Catholic Chicago mayor Lori Lightfoot during the funeral Mass for a slain police officer.
Brandt told CatholicNewsAgency.com that presiding Cardinal Cupich asked him "just moments prior to Communion" to take his place in distributing the Eucharist.
The chaplain became flustered when he saw the mayor step forward as the first in his line. “I am to blame for that,” he claims. Brandt used the pretext that his “whole weekend” [several days before] was a blur and he was “going on very little sleep.”
“I'm making excuses but yes, she came up, and I put the sacred host in her hand and I was like 'Oh!' and of course it was too late at that point. And I was like, 'Oh dear God, have mercy.'” He apologises “for any scandal” and wished, “the Cardinal had just given out Communion.”
