For forty years, St Peter Claver, a Jesuit priest, worked in Cartagena, Colombia, among the enslaved people. Calling himself the "slave of the slaves", he poured out his energies to care for them, advocate for racial justice, baptised them and heard their confessions, and cared for their spiritual and bodily needs. In 1650, he died from an epidemic, and in 1888 he was canonised and declared patron saint of the enslaved. This beautiful and moving statue of the saint is in the church of St Ignatius in the Loyola Sanctuary in Spain.
