Choir Practice: "Ave Maria" , Op23 No2, by Felix Mendelssohn (1809-1847). Written in 1830, "Ave Maria" is set for 8-part chorus and a small or semi-chorus. Each phrase of the melody is sung first by a tenor soloist, and then taken up by the full choir. It displays Mendelssohn's considerable melodic gift as well as his ability to effortlessly handle complex musical structure. Mendelssohn was not only a gifted composer and performer, but also an outstanding conductor. In 1833, he became Music Director of the town of Düsseldorf. He was responsible for conducting the choral and orchestral societies, and the sacred music for the Catholic services. For church services, he often brought back the works of the old masters, performing masses by Mozart, Haydn, Cherubini and Beethoven, cantatas by Bach, and earlier sacred music by Palestrina, Lotti, and Durante.
