Praying to a Prime Minister?

British journalist Damian Wilson, a Catholic, commented on Rt.com the fact that the Vatican has declared careerist French politician Robert Schuman ‘venerable.’ Schuman died in 1963, was twice French Prime Minister and is advertised as the “Father of Europe” while in reality he is only the “Father of the failed European Union.” Wilson doesn’t believe Schuman was a bad man, but he anticipates that launching him on the path to sainthood will bestow the Higher Power’s seal of approval upon the creaking political project called European Union.

A Miracle

Wilson observes that two miracles are required before making Schuman a blessed and then a saint. If this happens, he asks – quote - “Who will pray to a politician?” On the other hand, for Wilson it is a miracle that the EU has survived, so Francis setting the “Father of Europe” on the path to sainthood might not be so odd after all.

A NATO Saint?

Schuman also played a role in the founding of NATO, one of today’s instruments of Western imperialism. Wilson admits that on his death in 1963, he’d certainly earned his title as one of the Fathers of Europe. But that’s not the same as being a saint, Wilson stresses. Quote, “Despite Schuman’s devout Catholicism, his was a political career, not a religious calling.” Now, Wilson, being a Catholic, realises that he must consider Schuman “venerable”. His comment, “I’m not sure I can go along with that.”

Schuman’s Intercession Is Necessary

Wilson knows that there are still plenty of folk happy to be part of the European Union, not for any spiritual reason, but because they receive buckets of money to keep them happy. For him it’s a miracle the EU has survived until now and this could be used as a miracle for Schuman’s beatification. Quote, “With sainthood beckoning for Robert Schuman, maybe it's time Ursula von der Leyen and the EU disciples took to their knees in quiet prayer.” Because with problems in the east, Islamism in France, immigration across the Mediterranean, Schuman’s intercession to prevent further fractures might be just enough to save them.

I thought St. Benedict, along with Sts. Cyril & Methodius, and Bridget of Sweden are the patron saints of Europe. You know, back when it was Christendom!

It would be great to spread the good news but there is no way to "share on Gab."
