What I simply cannot wrap my head around is why so many people want to "bind up" others in the name of Christianity. Time after time, Jesus loosed people from the rigid social and religious constraints of the time. He gave St. Peter the keys to the kingdom "what you loose on earth....". Why don't people want to see other's bonds loosened? Jesus warned those who thought they were righteous that sinners were going to enter heaven before them. I think that's an apt metaphor for what's happening here.

It seems to me that not being rejected by your family (whatever that might mean) and civil union laws are two entirely separate issues. Am I missing something?

I suppose the one way it makes sense together is that Francis is addressing those looking in. At the same time, I don't see how anyone can suggest (and a whole lot of people are trying) he is not also accepting...promoting...encouraging the unions.

Translation: We have a pope who doesn’t believe - and didn’t believe even before becoming Pope - the Teaching of the very Church he leads!
