In August 2021 the bishops’ synod decided to implement a 1999 decision for uniformity in liturgical celebration across all 35 dioceses, a compromise endorsed by Francis, ordering to celebrate about half of the liturgy towards God.
When Ernakulam-Angamaly Archbishop Thazhath, southern India, tried to implement the decision, lay-people set his decree on fire outside his house on October 1. They threatened to block the entry and demanded Thazhath’s resignation who sought police protection.
