Syro-Malabar Catholics raised placards during Francis’ Wednesday audience demanding “La santa Messa versus Populum” (Holy Mass facing the people), UcaNews.com reports.
One wonders, what Novus Ordo Catholics made of this slogan. A liturgical dispute has been ongoing for fifty years in the Syro-Malabar Church, Southern India.
In August 2021 the bishops’ synod decided to implement a 1999 decision for uniformity in liturgical celebration across all 35 dioceses, a compromise endorsed by Francis, ordering to celebrate about half of the liturgy towards God.
When Ernakulam-Angamaly Archbishop Thazhath, southern India, tried to implement the decision, lay-people set his decree on fire outside his house on October 1. They threatened to block the entry and demanded Thazhath’s resignation who sought police protection.
