Bishop Cleared in Nun’s “Rape Case”

A court in Kottayam, India, has cleared former Jalandhar Bishop Franco Mulakkal, 54, accused of “raping a nun” between 2014 and 2016.

Mulakkal was arrested in 2018. The case sparked widespread protests after the nun belonging to the Missionaries of Jesus alleged that the Church had “ignored her complaints.”

The nun had alleged that the bishop had raped her 13 times when he visited her Kottayam convent in Kerala.

The January 14 decision stated that “the prosecution failed to prove all the charges against the accused." The nun's lawyers said they would challenge the verdict.

There are cases in which the identity documents of sisters who are about to leave the convent or who have been expelled from the church are not returned.
João Cardinal Bráz de Aviz said that some of these people engaged in prostitution to make a living.
He said, expressing regret that they were all once nuns.
