St Augustine of Canterbury who had come from Rome to evangelise England in 597 had a devotion to the teenage Roman martyr, St Pancratius, who was martyred by beheading c.304 under Diocletian. He named the first church that he built in England after him. Today, 12 May, is the feast of St Pancras, and this reliquary statue with a small relic of St Pancras is in the Rosary Shrine church in London because this church is located in the ancient medieval parish named after him.
