During the times of the 'Famine' and 'Anglo persecution', parts of Ireland were without recourse to the sacraments for periods up to, and beyond a year. Such deprivation and misery intensified the 'faith' of the Irish people, their only spiritual recompense was that of the Holy Rosary, recited in their native Irish language.
