Joseph Shaw Calls Leaked Letters "Unequivocal Good News"

The message of the leaked correspondence between Westminster Cardinal Nichols and the Prefect of the Liturgy Congregation Arthur Roche, is “positive”, Joseph Shaw, the president of the English Latin Mass Society (LMS), jubilates on OnePeterFive.com (November 6).

Shaw and the LMS are сriticised in the correspondence. Nichols writes that their interpretation of Traditionis Custodes is "obviously not in accord with the mind of the Holy Father," and Roche replies that the LMS interpretation “has no standing whatsoever."

Ignoring the ugly tone of the correspondence, Shaw expresses politely his understanding that TC aims not to kill the Roman Mass alone but all Roman Rite sacraments. "It would be odd if the other sacraments continued after that had come to pass,” he writes. He asks Roche however to refresh his memory of those documents which allow the Roman Rite Priestly Institutes to offer all sacraments according to the Roman Rite.

Regarding the 1971 Agatha-Christi indult which gave more freedom to the Roman Rite in England, Shaw criticises that neither Westminster Archdiocese nor the Liturgy Congregation have kept a record but he underlines that it is available on the LMS website.

Shaw wants to believe that it is positive that Archbishop Roche stresses the need for “a delicacy of care and direction” as the Roman Rite “has been regulated and not suppressed.” According to this selective reading, this is “unequivocal good news”, and “we must not allow any negative phrasing in these letters to distract us from that,” Shaw writes.

The reality is however that Roche stresses that TC allows “pastoral prudence” for “a very limited time only,” implying that after that "prudence" cannot be expected from the Vatican.

Archbishop Roche out here flatly contradicting Pope Benedict regarding the supposed abrogation of the TLM

Found this comment on Twitter: Like a number of prelates commenting on Tragical Custard, Roche uses the phrase: "the liturgy promulgated by V2" or the "liturgy of the Council." Are they really so ignorant of the origins of the NO to believe that it was a creation of the Council?

The question is how we get most for the Latin Mass out of this bad situation. Shaw has his approach. He will surely agree that there are others. Maybe it was not so bad after all that we had already before SSPX and FSSPX.

Remember, @Joseph Shaw had some recent personal experience in Rome - some meetings in October with senior officials, “We were being reassured rather than warned off,” Shaw told the NcRegister.com, “It’s not the case they want us to go away and die in a corner somewhere, certainly that’s the message at the moment. We’ve come across a surprisingly upbeat attitude.”

He suggested after these meetings to maintaining the unity with Francis and his bishops.

Joseph Shaw is certainly good-willed and has done a lot for the Latin Mass. But here he sounds like a gaslighter.
Joseph Shaw
Thanks. It does make more sense in the context of the whole post.

For instance, Archbishop Roche says in his letter to Cardinal Nichols that the traditional Mass “has been regulated and not supressed.”

@Joseph Shaw Thanks for your answer. I apologize for my tone. Sounded like Taylor Marshall....
What I wanted to say is: They want to get rid of the Latin Mass. Roche is known for beeing an open enemy.

Loved the sidenote on the Agatha-Christie-Indult.

They have to know this train has left the station. It’s all posturing. They know it’s unstoppable. Please. Come after us.

This is what gaslighting actually is

That which was sacred remains sacred. The TLM was never abrogated and every priest, by their ordination, has the right to its use. This is guaranteed by the Council of Trent and the Papal Bull “Quo Primum Tempore.” The Novus Ordo is not of Vatican II, but is of a Protestant committee and a Masonic archbishop. The Novus Ordo was rejected by the body of Cardinals in 1967 but imposed by Pope Paul VI in 1969. It’s not Catholic and was never universally accepted by the Church. The Pope John Paul II committee found that the TLM wasn’t abrogated and never can be abrogated. Therefore, the TLM MUST be provided to the Catholics who want it, along with all the other sacraments according to the Latin Rite. No Pope, Council, Synod, or Church prelate has the authority to change what has been previously decreed by past Councils and accepted universally by the Church.
