Cardinal Pell about Benedict: Wonderful Stage Comes to An End

Cardinal Pell was surprised at his own sadness in the wake of Benedict XVI's death (EWTN.com, January 3). He still expected the doctors to be able to prolong his life a bit.

“I have known him well enough, I thought he was very good for the Church, it was sad to see another wonderful stage in Church history ending.”

Pell describes Benedict as gentle and pious and the complete opposite of the "absurd" caricatures of the oligarch media that Ratzinger, a highly intelligent man, must have been "amused" by because they were irrelevant and so far from the truth.

For Pell, a pope needs not to be a great preacher, star, leader, administrator or politician, but the pope has "a scriptural role." Pell calls him "the successor of Peter" [a title, Francis has trashed], "foundation of the Church," "guarantor that the people in the pews are receiving the same teachings that Christ to the apostles gave."

The pope also guarantees that the unity of the Church, 1.4 billion Catholics, is built "around the figure of Christ.”

Benedict did, was he was supposed to, Pell believes: “Strengthen the Faith of his brothers, not to entertain the non-believers or those who have rejected what we are about.”

I would not describe the last 10 years "a wonderful stage in Church history".....more like a disastrous stage in Church History" when Jorge Bergoglio.....with 1 consistory on the Family....2 Synods on the Family....as a build up towards the release by the Apostolic Exhortation "Amoris Laetitia"..... which gave official approval for Sacrilegious Communion for the divorced and civilly remarried.

I'm not sure the title successor of Peter was done away with, but definitely the title "Vicar of Christ" was relegated to the place of "historically known as..." and removed from official title of what a Pope is in the Vatican Diary. Vicar is the one who guards his master's home until the master returns.

"not to entertain the non-believers or those who have rejected what we are about.” That's all Pope Francis has done. And to be fair, that's alot of what JPII did too.

One of the central tenets of liberalism seems to be a great love of the "other," a fascination with those who are not of the faithful. Can't do enough for people who want nothing to do with the Church. Also, Benedict left the faithful with a Traditional Mass of much easier access. The fruits of this decision were immediately obvious. Now Francis is closing the door. I wonder if Francis will also have the American Church revert to the previously lousy translations used at Mass, which Benedict improved.
