He should have just kept the original bishop's residence as a heritage for the diocese. This "virtue-signaling" on behalf of prelates reveals that they think honors given to their office is really about the man himself. Think of Francis driving around in that ignoble compact car!

My Granddad (still living at 88 even after Covid-19!!) was in Rome in 1961 for his job which was based in Tokyo. He saw John XXIII being driven in an early 1950's style big limo....big enough to have a mini throne-seat in the back instead of just a seat. Also space for 2 secretaries to sit facing him. The car obviously originally was Pius XII's, and a front compartment for the chauffer. Even just driving to an ancient church, there were hughe crowds on the sidelines cheering and waving to John XXIII. When he got out, he had on his white cassock, lace surplice, gold stole, red mozzetta and a red Saturno Roman platter hat. Despite the fact he had not much papal dignity like Pius XII or Benedict XVI, he looked like a real Pope. My Granddad taped the event with his old camera, and my Grandmom suggested we convert his whole library of tapes when he was in Rome (1960-67), then he got transferred to L.A. where our family lived until he was transferred to Philly (1991). He retired in 2006, and started cataloging his huge film library, which has about 150 tapes on Rome, Popes, sites, Assisi,Venice, opening day of Vatican II ( 😡) . But neither John XXIII, Paul VI, JPII, or Benedict XVI would ride around in the front seat of a little compact car. Francis is such a clown! Not in the good sense either.

Bishops who act thus show that their spirit is much more on the material side than the spritual

If the house pictured is the house Etienne bought, it's not that much to look at. Looks like a 1914 era house probably in a neighborhood of the same type. That house for Etienne is nothing to gripe about. A 3,400 square foot house is NOT a mansion, or anything to fault find about. Totally unimpressive. Our family house on the beach in Avalon, NJ is 6,700 square feet with 1 1/2 acres. I was impressed …More

Our family house on the beach in Avalon, NJ is 6,700 square feet with 1 1/2 acres. I was impressed when we bought it, but now they're knocking down early 1960's Shore houses and putting up 10,000 square foot mansions, making our pretty big house look puny, along with mostly all the others on the block.
No one should begrudge Pope Francis' little favorite Etienne his little shack. It's nothing to be proud over.

And we wonder why young people think the Church is hypocritical.
