Before the prayer of the Angelus, Benedict XVI made the appeal of the Patriarchs of the Oriental Churches present at the Synod of Bishops an appeal of his own, calling the world's attention to the tragedies happening in Iraq and India "where Christians are victims of intolerance and cruel violence, murdered, threatened, forced to abandon their homes and wander in search of refuge".
These Christians simply wish to continue living in their country as they always have, the Pope explained. Therefore Benedict XVI requested that the civil and religious authorities involved restore legality, civil cohabitation and the protection of honest and loyal citizens. He then expressed his hope that the same authorities "accomplish significant and explicit deeds of friendship and respect toward minorities, Christian or of other religions".
