Pope Francis has also installed 13 new members to the Sacred College of Cardinals. The installation took place at a consistory in Saint Peter’s Basilica in Rome on Saturday. Among the new cardinals is Archbishop Wilton Gregory of Washington, DC. In his homily, Pope Francis warned those cardinals present not be seduced by the worldly prestige of their new office. After the consistory, Pope Francis and the newly created cardinals visited Emeritus Pope Benedict at his residence within the Vatican. Each new cardinal received a titular or honorific responsibility for a parish church in the City of Rome. High Court in England rules on puberty-blockers for teenagers The High Court in England has ruled that children under 16 with gender dysphoria are unlikely to be able to give informed consent to undergo treatment involving puberty-blocking drugs. The legal case was brought against a London public health authority, Tavistock and Portman NHS Trust. They operate the Tavistock Centre. That's the UK’s only specialist clinic for young people with gender dysphoria. Amongst those bringing the legal action was 23-year-old Keira Bell, a young woman from the city of Cambridge. She was referred to the Tavistock Centre with suspected gender dysphoria as a teenager and was prescribed puberty blockers at age 16. Pope Francis greets Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew Pope Francis says he is confident that the Catholic Church and Eastern Orthodox Church will one day be re-united by, “walking together in mutual love and pursuing theological dialogue”. The Holy Father made his comments in a message to Orthodox Christianity’s most senior cleric, the Ecumenical Patriarch of Constantinople, Bartholomew I, upon the Feast of Saint Andrew on Monday. The Pope recalled how 100 years ago, the then Patriarch of Constantinople, had written an encyclical letter calling for, “greater closeness and understanding between Christians”. Aid to the Church in Need launches asylum petition for Maira Shahbaz The Catholic human rights group, Aid to the Church in Need, is urging the British Prime Minister Boris Johnson to offer asylum to a young Catholic girl in Pakistan who is currently in hiding after fleeing a forced marriage to a Muslim man 30 years her senior. 14-year-old Maira Shahbaz from the western city of Faisalabad was abducted from her family in April of this year. According to her police statement, she was then raped, forced to convert to Islam and also forced to marry one of her abductors, a man by the name of Mohamad Nakash Tariq. Miss Shahbaz's case soon came to court leading to her being placed in a women and girl’s shelter. Cardinal Schönborn expresses solidary with Jewish community Austrian Cardinal Christoph Schönborn has expressed solidarity with the country’s Jewish community following an attack upon a rabbi in Vienna last week. According to press reports, the rabbi was assaulted in broad daylight by a woman screaming, “slaughter the Jews”. The female, who is believed to be in her 50's, attacked the rabbi with a knife and ripped his hat and kippah from his head. She then kicked him before fleeing the scene. The rabbi is not severely injured. Archbishop Cordileone: Worship is both a natural and a constitutional right The State of California has banned indoor worship in two of the three counties that make up the Archdiocese of San Francisco. The ban came into effect on Sunday and applies to San Francisco County and San Mateo County. It’s being imposed, say the State, in order to combat the COVID-19 pandemic. In response, though, the Archbishop of San Francisco has accused the Californian government of, “blatant discrimination”. Vatican dicastery launches ‘Gift of Wisdom’ campaign The Vatican department responsible for promoting family life is inviting young people around the world to send a seasonal message to the elderly this Christmas. In return, says the Dicastery for Laity, Family and Life, young people will receive the gift of wisdom. They note that due to the present COVID-19 pandemic, many parts of the world will see family visits only take place remotely, via the telephone, video calls, and text messaging.
