Cardinal Burke Critiques Novus Ordo: "Radically Reduced," "Stripped of Beauty"

Young Catholics are flocking to the Mass in the Roman rite because of its beauty, Cardinal Burke told journalist Raymond Arroyo on his Youtube.com-channel (August 8). Main quotes:

- This more ancient form of the Roman Rite was celebrated from Gregory the Great (+604) until Vatican II (1962-1965).

- The reforms after the Council of Trent (1545-1563) were to address some elements, but the form of the rite was maintained and in continuity for more than 15 centuries. Whereas after the Second Vatican Council - not due to the teaching of the Council, but to the way in which that teaching was abused -, the rite was radically reduced.

- I don't question the validity [of the Novus Ordo] in any way. There is a continuity, but it's so strained. You don't take something so rich in beauty and start stripping away the beautiful elements without having a negative effect.

- The form of the ancient rite is such that it makes it clear that it's Christ who's acting. The priest is acting in the person of Christ, but the priest fades into the background and Christ emerges because of the form of the rite.

- There's no spontaneity, there's not this kind of familiarity that was introduced after the council, like introducing ordinary language into the sacred liturgy.

- We don't go to the Holy Mass to take part in some secular activity that keeps us in the worldly and what is not uplifting, what is not inspiring, we go there to encounter God.

- It's clear when one is assisting at this rite that something heavenly is taking place, something that's beyond this world.

- Worship is worship of God as God himself has instructed us to worship him.

Ad Orientem Worship

- The priest is acting in the person of Christ, head and shepherd of the flock. And so he's at the head of the flock, leading them in prayer, and everyone is facing God.

- The priest is not praying to the people, the priest is not putting on some kind of theater for the people. He is the head of the people leading them in prayer to God. The priest isn't interacting with the people, the priest is at their head.

- You wouldn't want the bus driver on the bus to be looking at you when he's supposed to be driving you somewhere.

- We need to teach again what the Mass is and what it means to worship God. People think it's some kind of social event, or some kind of a communal meal, whatever it might be.

Compare the above statements of Cardinal Burke to those of Bishop Burke at the head of the Diocese of La Crosse (up until 2004) over twenty years ago, when he had absolutely no use whatsoever for the Tradition nor the Traditional Latin Mass: completely the opposite!
He was truly 'Saul', persecutor of traditionalists--a "NOM neocon to the death"--back then...having dealt with him as a traditional priest at that time.
I received my share of lecturing and lumps on the head from dear Bishop Burke. The above were my arguments back then that he poo-pooed with lots of hemming and huffing as is his wont. Now he espouses them. Interesting.
Am I seeing a bit of 'St. Paul''s "conversion on the road to Damascus" poking its nose out from amidst the lace and fluff? He still 'happily' celebrates the Novus Ordo Happy Meal remember...
Pray for his COMPLETE conversion to the Roman Rite of Always, its One, Holy, Catholic, and Apostolic Roman Church, its papacy, its doctrine, and its morality. Our Lady of Fatima, pray for us! Our Lady of LaSalette, pray for us! Our Lady of Quito, pray for us! Our Lady of Akita, pray for us!

Dear Cardinal Burke, please Read the Papal declaration by Pope St Pius V ‘Quo Primum’ that unambiguously states the Novus Ordo Mass to be strictly forbidden, under pain of Heavenly punishment. There is no legitimacy for the Novus Ordo in any Catholic Church.

If SSPX bishops were consecrated by bishops who were consecrated by bishops, then their line of succession is just as documented as Novus Ordo bishops.

We don't know how to talk/pray/worship to God. He had to tell us how to do so and he did: "Worship is worship of God as God himself has instructed us to worship him."

It takes a while to realize it, but Cardinal Burke's words are accurate.

Yes, well said. Now, how about the elephant in the room? Nothing has changed between Bergoglio and Prevost, no heretical practice rescinded, no heretical teaching renounced, the destruction of our Church continues...and yet they start with kissie-kissie note from Bobby-boy and Arroyo's fake flattery. Sorry, I couldn't stomach any further...

Well said by you, @Boanerges Boanerges. The cardinal is big on words, but what is he actually DOING to fix any of the problems? Nothing and more nothing!

😇 You wouldn't want the bus driver to be looking at you when...driving you somewhere! Great synthesis of the main points about the Traditional Latin Mass vs. taking part in a meeting with spontaneity and often very worldly events.

"We need to teach again what the Mass is and what it means to worship God. People think it's some kind of social event, or some kind of a communal meal, whatever it might be."
Sensibly so, as it so informs the senses. You can't teach something is a wardrobe when in form it is plainly a chair. Nor can you be surprised when people sit on it. It has to be recognisable as a wardrobe in form. When it is so people will quite naturally understand it's a wardrobe. In short, the form informs.

It also radically reduced the faith of countless Catholics. By design.
