On the 24th of February in 591, Pope St Gregory the Great had this Byzantine icon of Our Lady and the Child Jesus, recently arrived from the East, carried throughout Rome while praying for an end to the Plague pandemic. She is thus called 'The Health (or Salvation) of the Roman People', and she is now enshrined in a chapel in the Basilica of St Mary Major in Rome. As the threat of a COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic escalates, and as Masses are suspended in the north of Italy (as well as other dioceses in Asia), we pray that Our Lady will come to our aid once more.
