Pell's Last Text: Francis' Synod Is A Toxic Nightmare
In his last text before he died, Cardinal Pell called Francis' Synod a "toxic nightmare" and the Synod’s working document "one of the most incoherent documents ever sent out from Rome," a "potpourri," and an "attack on morals" including "neo-Marxist jargon" (Spectator.co.uk, January 11).
Pell writes the document doesn't acknowlede the New Testament as normative for all teaching on faith and morals, and considers it "hostile" to the apostolic tradition.”
He points out that the Synod’s Relator Jean-Claude Hollerich (“chief writer and manager”) is rejecting the Church's teaching on sexuality, “In normal times this would have meant that his continuing as Relator was inappropriate, indeed impossible.”
Pell expects the Synod to park Church teaching in a "limbo where some choose to redefine sins downwards."
The Synod’s procedure to transmit to Francis only the views of the organising committee is for Pell "an abuse of synodality” and “a sidelining of the bishops.” For him, this is "not due process" and "liable to manipulation.”
